چکیده

We measured the phonon density of states (DOS) of nanocrystalline Fe by resonant inelastic nuclear g-ray scattering. The nanophase material shows large distortions in its phonon DOS. We attribute the high energy distortion to lifetime broadening. A damped harmonic oscillator model for the phonons provides a low quality factor, Qu, averaging about 5, but the longitudinal modes may have been broadened most. The nanocrystalline Fe also shows an enhancement in its phonon DOS at energies below 15 meV. The difference in vibrational entropy of the bulk and nanocrystalline Fe was small, owing to competing changes in the nanocrystalline phonon DOS at low and high energies. [S0031-9007(97)03708-3]

Local Chemical Environments and the Phonon Partial Densities of States of 57 Fe in 57 Fe 3

Inelastic nuclear resonant scattering spectra were measured on alloys of Fe3Al that were chemically disordered, partially ordered, and D03 ordered. The features in the phonon partial density of states of 57Fe were found to change systematically with chemical short-range order in the alloy. Changes in the phonon partial density of states were modeled successfully by assigning vibrational spectra...

Phonons in iron: from the bulk to an epitaxial monolayer.

The confinement of materials in low-dimensional structures has significant impact on propagating excitations like phonons. Using the isotope-specific 57Fe nuclear resonant vibrational spectroscopy we were able to determine elastic and thermodynamic properties of ultrathin Fe films on W(110). With decreasing thickness one observes a significant increase of the mean atomic displacement that goes ...

Corrigendum: Thermal transport in nanocrystalline Si and SiGe by ab initio based Monte Carlo simulation

Nanocrystalline thermoelectric materials based on Si have long been of interest because Si is earth-abundant, inexpensive, and non-toxic. However, a poor understanding of phonon grain boundary scattering and its effect on thermal conductivity has impeded efforts to improve the thermoelectric figure of merit. Here, we report an ab-initio based computational study of thermal transport in nanocrys...

Importance of frequency-dependent grain boundary scattering in nanocrystalline silicon and silicon-germanium thermoelectrics

Nanocrystalline silicon and silicon-germanium alloys are promising thermoelectric materials that have achieved substantially improved figure of merits compared to their bulk counterparts. This enhancement is typically attributed to a reduction in lattice thermal conductivity by phonon scattering at grain boundaries. However, further improvements are difficult to achieve because grain boundary s...

Interface and confined polar optical phonons in spherical ZnO quantum dots with wurtzite crystal structure

We derive analytically the interface and confined polar optical-phonon modes for spherical quantum dots with wurtzite crystal structure. While the frequency of confined optical phonons in zincblende nanocrystals is equal to that of the bulk crystal phonons, the confined polar optical phonons in wurtzite nanocrystals are shown to have a discrete spectrum of frequencies different from those in bu...
